Created for a prestigious Chinese Typography Design Competition organized by GAAHK, this award-winning poster investigates the elemental foundations and structural versatility of Chinese character construction. The work explores how fundamental brushstroke principles can generate both traditional authority and contemporary innovation.

Conceptual Framework

Reconstructing the Eight Principles of Yong (永字八法)

Deconstructed the canonical brushstroke system of the character “永,” which encapsulates the eight foundational strokes of Chinese calligraphy. Reassembled these elemental forms into an iconic Chinese Opera Mask silhouette—bridging calligraphic tradition with theatrical symbolism and cultural identity.

The composition transforms typographic anatomy into narrative form.

Dual Visual Language: Weight vs. Detail

Structured the poster into a binary visual contrast:

- Right Side – Solid Heavyweight Tradition
Massive, sweeping ink strokes rendered with bold density and visual gravity, representing structural strength and timeless authority.
 

- Left Side – Intricate Contemporary Deconstruction
The same strokes fragmented into fine geometric filigree, ornamental linework, and halftone textures—symbolizing infinite reinterpretation derived from foundational rules. This duality highlights the tension between tradition and evolution.

Executed high-end black foil and metallic silver foil stamping across contrasting dark and light backgrounds.
