The Serene Gaze

Exhibition Visual Identity & Poster Design

Client: Art Museum, The Chinese University of Hong Kong

Exhibition: Masterpieces from Qingletang Collection (清樂堂藏珍品萃華)

Role: Key Visual Concept, Exhibition Art Direction & Typographic Design

Overview & Background

"The Serene Gaze" (靜觀自得) was a featured special exhibition hosted by the Art Museum of The Chinese University of Hong Kong, presenting rare cultural masterpieces from the Qingletang Collection. The creative challenge was to deconstruct and recontextualize centuries-old classical Chinese paintings from the exhibition, transforming traditional master brushwork into a striking, contemporary visual identity tailored for modern institutional curation.

Creative Concept & Visual Strategy

  • Deconstructed Classical Painting Motif:

The visual core is directly developed and reinterpreted from an authentic ancient painting featured in the exhibition. The delicate plum blossom branch and blooming petals are extracted, digitally enhanced, and layered to preserve the tactile texture of classical ink and mineral pigments while reimagining them through a modern graphic lens.

  • Overlapping Temporal Spheres:

The floral motif is seamlessly integrated with three vertically aligned, translucent circular gradients. These overlapping crimson-to-charcoal spheres symbolize the act of focused contemplation (靜觀), creating visual focal points that guide the viewer’s gaze through the layers of time and painterly detail.

  • Refined Typographic Harmony:

The Chinese title "靜觀自得" is set in a slender, elegant Songti typeface aligned strictly along the central vertical axis, complemented by classical English serif typography ("THE SERENE GAZE"). The disciplined typographic architecture grounds the fluid composition, establishing a sophisticated museum-grade visual standard.
